Yet another fantastic episode from Emmerdale to kick off what is being billed as a killer week on the show. Tonight's episode followed three stories, and it did all three justice, with strong scenes, good writing and the formidable acting that we've become accustomed to from this flawless cast.
Ashley has been diagnosed with epilepsy. This is a sad, yet realistic direction for the story to go into, and John Middleton played the scene beautifully. I hope that this doesn't become a character defining moment, more of an added bit of information to Ashley's personality, that's all. Charlotte Bellamy gave it her all again tonight. She conveys her emotions so well it's frightening. The look and tone of voice she does so effortlessly, which lets every viewer know how vulnerable and useless she is feeling. Laurel having chlamydia was a great twist, and another thing for her to deal with. Fortunately, it looks like things are getting better, until she gets chucked out. Ashley fights her corner, and I hope he wins.
This week is all about the love triangle that is Debbie, Pete and Ross. Whilst it's obvious that she will choose Ross, every single second of this is enjoyable. Debbie feels like she can't be in the same room as Ross, and begins to take a slight disrespect to him when he asks Zach for money. I loved Debbie calling Ross out on his horrendously poor lying early in the episode, saying that it was a customer on the phone and then telling them not to ring them at work. Debbie's sarcastic response almost earnt her line of the night. But, no matter how much Debbie finds Ross irritating, she wants him and he wants her. And maybe once they are together, the boring as hell Pete and Carly can clear off.
Adam and Victoria are going to flee Emmerdale and are going to get married. Moira isn't happy, whilst Cain is a passive spectator. And the person who's going to stop them is...
...Robert. The local crazed bisexual psychopath somehow manages to become even more self absorbed and arrogant. Yes, Robert does want to protect Victoria. But deep down, he just wants to do all of this to make him feel more manly. To tell himself that he isn't gay. Well, sorry Rob, it ain't working. He couldn't hide his sexual tension towards Aaron as soon as he clapped eyes on him. I loved Aaron delivering some home truths to Robert and telling him that not everyone is scared of him, winning him line of the night. The reason that Emmerdale have got Robert so right is because they never intended him to be a scary villain; more someone desperately trying to be intimidating, but instead being a multi layered guy who is lying to himself about his sexuality. Only Aaron knows, but you can bet your bottom dollar that Chrissie will do soon. I love Ryan Hawley and I think that he's one of the best additions to the cast in years, but he seemed to mess the final scene with too many head movements. And no, he isn't going to kill Adam. He isn't man enough, no matter how much he tells himself he is.
Excellent start to the week.
